Gladiator Excerpt Dream Sequence

"Why are the dream sequences included?  At first glance, they don’t make sense.  They simply are dream sequences and nothing more.  In fact one movie reviewer online makes fun of the dream sequences saying that during the battle between Maximus and Commodus in the arena, the film quickly moves to a “commercial.”  This is what the reviewer calls the dream sequence that interrupts the fight.  What this reviewer doesn’t realize is that there is a deliberate purpose the fight is interrupted with another dream sequence.  This interruption is signaling that Maximus is about to enter the next stage in his life, as obviously shown when he is imagining himself walking toward the door that is closed but is the entrance to the path that leads to his house.  This shows that he is about to enter death and go on to the next phase of his life—that of being with his family in the afterlife."
