film can also be appreciated from this artistic level. What are some things to look for and enjoy?
1. Beginning and Ending Scenes: These correlate by “opening” and “closing” the movie like
the curtains on a stage. How is this accomplished? In the beginning scene, Hidalgo and Hopkins are together as they
race cross-country and win. In the end, Hopkins lets Hidalgo go and they part also after a
win. Thus, at first, Hidalgo and Hopkins are together, and at the end,
they say goodbye.
Also, the opening moments of the movie show Hidalgo by
himself drinking water by breaking the ice and he is alone. At the end he is freed and running with the other mustangs.
Hopkins also becomes free as he will ride the wagon with those of his bloodline.
Moreover, these scenes are shown in winter at the beginning
and then shown during spring at the end.
The contrasting of together/apart, alone-not free/with own
kind-free, and winter/spring are artistic details used to open and close
the movie.
