Thank you to Pilar Massaguer (Revista Hipica Catalana Magazine.  Two pictures on right) for this exclusive interview she has shared with EBH!

Pilar asked Viggo a total of ten questions.  Two of Mr. Mortensen's answers are shown here and the rest are in ebook.

You will notice how Mr. Mortensen answered the questions fully in Spanish.  This has been included to give a "language flavor" of how the interview went.  Thank you also to Mr. Mortensen!

Entrevista a Viggo Mortensen para revista “Revista Hipica Catalana” por Pilar Massaguer.

Interview to Viggo Mortensen for "Equestrian Catalonian" magazine by Pilar Massaguer.

Translation:

Pilar:  "It is obvious that you are an acomplished rider (we could see you in LOTR), but where did you learn to ride? And, was it due to your job as an actor or was it a hobby you had since your childhood (or another time in your life)."

Viggo:  "I learnt in Argentina and I have wonderful recollections of horses I met in the province of Buenos Aires and of the nags that taught me several things in the Chaco until I was eleven. Apart from the brief experience I had in the film, Young Guns II with the horse “Flaxie” in 1990, I didn’t have much opportunity of riding horses until we shoot “The Two Towers” and “The Return of The King” and recently and much more in “Hidalgo”. I still love horse, which makes very pleasant a job that required me to work on horse back or in company of a horse most of the time. By the way, I have to mention that the scenes of “Hidalgo” that were shot in Morocco, the knowledgeable Spaniard Ricardo Cruz and other excellent riders from Spain who worked with Rex Peterson. They came from working for Minghella in “Cold Mountain” and after working with us they went to New Zealand to help with the shooting of the “Last Samurai”. We went along fine and it was a pleasure to work with them."

Translation:

Pilar:  "What type of riding did you learn, or better, what type of riding do you practice?: English (hunt seat), Western or another type."

Viggo:  "I learned 'gaucho style' which is basically Western. In the 'Lord of the Rings' I had to ride English in some shots, specially in the first scenes on horseback because they (the horses) were not trained to work on a loose rein or to respond to 'neck reining'. That made the job of fighting with a sword or spear while keeping the control (on the horse) a bit difficult. But after a period of training, both horses 'Kenny' and 'Uraeus' got used to it and allowed me to ride them with one hand."
