It's
that time of year to take down
the old calendar
and bring in the new,
despite
the drooping nail.
What
would that spot on the wall do?
What
would we do without these pages
that
corner time in little
square boxes
that have numbers we learned
as
precise as elementary
school.
Without
this written form,
we can
add our days
by the
need for coffee with the sun
and the wrinkles the rays have
found
on
trees, their leaves lined by green spines
growing
as straight as training
wheels
wobbling to be freed,
or by the pairs of toddler socks lost
and
the happy toes that have known them.
