From Perceval Press Home Page, January
2006:
"The U.S. Declaration of
Independence mentions the need for 'a decent respect for the opinions of
mankind'. When we as Americans see ourselves as different and superior to
other peoples and other nations, as George W. Bush and his go-it-alone
agenda would have us do, we are not respecting ourselves or anyone else.
We are, rather, enslaving ourselves by willingly building the walls of our
own prison with one ignorant brick after another. We are depriving
ourselves and others of having a true world community. It is strange, at
the start of the 21st century, with all the improvements in communication
and global awareness, that we would even consider such a primitive and
self-destructive approach to life on this planet. Every empire in history
has stumbled and fallen because of the narrow-minded isolationism that
comes from 'you're with me or against me' and 'obey or be destroyed'
attitudes. The world is getting smaller and more interdependent all the
time. It is insane to ignore this fact. We do not need to be overly
concerned with being liked by the world, but we ought to accept the fact
that we are part of it."
"We have a greater responsibility
than any U.S. electorate has ever had. It is no exaggeration to say that
we owe it to ourselves and to the rest of humanity to insist on new and
better government in the United States. It will forever be a black mark on
our history as a people if we do not make up for the ongoing ravages
accelerated by the extreme right-wing minority that has increasingly come
to dominate policy in both the Republican Party and the U.S. government
during the past five years. The overt usurpation of power through routine
violation of established law and ethical standards by this divisive,
intolerant, fundamentalist element of U.S. society continues to threaten
our economy, our environment, our civil rights, our armed forces, and our
reputation as a fair-minded country. Please lets do the right thing by
this nation and all nations by voting for responsible world citizens in
all 2006 U.S. elections, local and federal, regardless of party
affiliation." - V.M.
