Picture below of Mount Rushmore with the
flags of the states and territories of the United States.
The
sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, chose George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and
Theodore Roosevelt. Why? "Washington was selected for
Mount Rushmore because he was the father of our country and represents our
struggle for independence, our constitution and our liberty. Jefferson was
to be honored on Mt. Rushmore as the author of the Declaration of
Independence, representative government and for the expansion of our
country through the Louisiana Purchase. Teddy Roosevelt, the third bust on
Mount Rushmore was selected because he saw through the completion of the
Panama Canal linking the oceans and opening the connecting waters of the
East and the West. Lincoln was chosen for preserving the Union through one
of America's darkest hours and for the ideals of freedom and equality for
all." -http://www.mountrushmoreinfo.com/
Also, according to the wishes of Borglum,
there is no admission fee. However, there is a parking pass that is
good for the entire calendar year to encourage repeat visits.
In 2008, this costs $10.00. I still have the parking pass and will
no longer use it this calendar year so if you know someone who will be
going to Mount Rushmore in the remaining months of this year and would
like to use this pass and save a few dollars, email me your mailing
address and I can mail to you. Or you can call 913-269-3177. My email: mar @
