Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Movie Review

July 21, 2005

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Movie Review

From an adult’s point of view, Depp once again shows his versatility and Freddie Highmore is a natural talent and it’s good to see Helena Bonham Carter (A Room With A View).

From my two son’s point of view, when I asked them what was their favorite part, my four-year old said the singing and my seven-year old said when Wonka crashes on the glass elevator.  He also describes how the earlier movie had a “real” Wonka while this one has a Wonka with make-up.

Usually, my kids don't spend as much time reacting to a movie, but this time, Wonka stayed on their minds.  They kept singing, “Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka, Wonka, Wonka…”  My four-year old quickly started creating his own version of a factory and gave me a card for my golden ticket.  My seven-year old joins in, asks me to cut tape and helps my four-year old make the ticket more realistic by wrapping the card in paper for me to open.  Then, of course, I get my own tour of the factory where a machine spits out pizza for me to eat.  My four-year old even adds the nice touch of crashing on the door before opening it to continue his factory tour.

From this level, the movie succeeds.
