Viggo
Mortensen and Other Sword-Fighting Actors
March 2003
What is it
about sword-fighting actors that attract movie audiences today? Russell Crowe gave us what we wanted or needed at the time in Gladiator.
Viggo Mortensen also does the same with the Lord of the Rings
films. So if you're like me, you are probably asking, why in the
world are you attracted to these sword-fighting actors?
For me I
think it's their characters on the screen. These men are strong,
closer to the gods than men, as well as full of true goodness and kindness
with a fiercely loving heart. Not only that, they look great
mud-splattered, with wet, unkempt hair, and with costumes that look like
they haven't been washed for weeks! And they look great in action
sequences as well as the quiet-moment scenes. And in the case of
Viggo Mortensen, those highly-focused and quiet times when he can sit down
and write a poem, or create his paintings.
So this
combination is what attracts me to this kind of actor. It appears
I'm not the only one. After reading more about Viggo Mortensen, I'm
a bit late in discovering him.
